Title: Nanotechnologies: Capturing the Opportunities and Addressing the Uncertainties

Date and time: Monday 5 September 2005, 11.00 - 13.30
Nano Experts Running this Workshop
Chair: Dr Adrian Butt (OST)
Co-chair: Stephen Dennison (MNT Network)
Abstract
In 2003, Lord Sainsbury the UK Science and Innovation minister, asked the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering to conduct an independent study to look at the possible ethical, social, health and safety and environmental questions that could arise from nanotechnologies. Their seminal report “Nanoscience and nanotechnologies: opportunities and uncertainties” was published in July 2004. In February this year, the Government responded setting out the Government’s agenda that will allow the development of nanotechnologies in a responsible and innovative way. A cornerstone of the Governments agenda is its ambition to work in partnership with industry, civil society groups, the research community and the public so that we can move forward together, bringing forward our particular perspectives to ensure we reap the benefits and avoid the pitfalls.
